DR MARC SIEGEL: Pope Leo's lung surgery puts modern medicine alongside faith

DR MARC SIEGEL: Pope Leo's lung surgery puts modern medicine alongside faith

When Pope Leo XIV visited Lourdes, France, on Sept. 26, he drank a glass of water from the spring at the Grotto of Massabielle, where St. Bernadette Soubirous reported visions of the Virgin Mary in 1858.

Who knew last month that the pope might be calling on the healing waters to help in his own healing as he faces surgical removal of what the Vatican has described as "a small localized nodule" that he has said "was identified at a very early stage and well situated."

The surgery will take place Tuesday, Oct. 13, followed by a week of recovery at Rome’s highly rated Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital. Small lung nodules are often detected on CT scans of the lungs. If the nodule is small and well circumscribed, and has characteristics, including irregularities that are concerning for malignancy, as may be the case here, removal can often be performed using minimally invasive techniques.

POPE LEO ARRIVES AT HOSPITAL FOR SURGERY TO REMOVE LUNG NODULE

The surgeon leading his medical team is Professor Stefano Margaritora, director of the Thoracic Surgery Unit at Gemelli and an expert in minimally invasive techniques. Margaritora is known for uniportal (one small incision) video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), which is done via a scope under direct visualization. This is the procedure that will be performed on the pope.

Dr. Robert Cerfolio, CEO at Pinnacle Global Health and one of the top minimally invasive lung surgeons in the world, thinks highly of Margaritora but generally prefers a robotic approach, in part because of smaller incisions and better visualization. The robot is placed between the ribs and into the chest and is controlled by the surgeon from a console.

POPE LEO ANNOUNCES TUMOR ON LUNG, SURGERY PLANNED IN 'NEXT FEW DAYS'

If all goes well, I would expect the Holy Father to resume normal activities fairly quickly. His recovery will no doubt be aided by the fact that, at age 71, he has maintained an active lifestyle and has generally appeared to be in good health.

Lourdes is famous not only for the 72 healings officially recognized as miraculous by the Catholic Church — instantaneous healings with no medical explanation — but also for "small miracles that aren’t recognized until later." Those are the words of Fox Business anchor David Asman. Asman is his wife’s "voiturier" at Lourdes, meaning that he takes her around the sanctuary during their visits. The couple has made pilgrimages to Lourdes following a stroke affecting the right side of his wife’s brain in 2004 that left her with severe loss of strength on her left side.

POPE LEO DRAWS STAGGERING 800,000 FAITHFUL TO HEART OF PARIS FOR MASSIVE OUTDOOR MASS

Marta Cecilia Asman is rejuvenated spiritually at Lourdes. She watches people who come there hopeless and return home with tremendous hope, their spiritual and emotional state completely changed.

"Lourdes is a miracle," she says to me in an interview for my new book, "The Angels Among Us." "Not everyone can say they are cured. For me, my hand opens and starts working again after my stroke when it isn’t supposed to. During my rehab at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital [in New York’s Westchester County], I’m told I’m not supposed to be able to walk on my own again, but I do. … Sometimes I feel I am trapped in New York City. But then I am uplifted by Lourdes, my emotional health is tied to Lourdes, and I know there is no limit to what I can do."

POPE LEO CALLS OUT ‘FALSE COMPASSION’ OF MEDICALLY ASSISTED SUICIDE DURING FRENCH HOSPITAL VISIT

Dr. Alessandro De Franciscis, outgoing director of the Lourdes Office of Medical Observations, tells me in an interview for the book that Lourdes is a joyful place, a place of mind-over-matter healing. "The pilgrims who travel here are malades who may not be able to get into the metro or climb a stairway or push into a department store, and yet they thrive here."

The "malades" are cared for by four times as many volunteer caregivers a.k.a. "hospitaliers."

During his September 2026 visit to Lourdes, Pope Leo met with thousands of sick pilgrims and the hospitaliers who outnumber and care for them, celebrating the sanctuary's profound legacy of physical, spiritual and internal healing.

And now, as he undergoes surgery with the benefit of modern medical science, it certainly won't hurt to have the prayers of millions around the world — and to have partaken of the healing waters of the Lourdes Grotto.

Underdog Promo Code FOXNEWS: Play $5, Get $100 on Rams vs Bills on Monday Night Football

Underdog Promo Code FOXNEWS: Play $5, Get $100 on Rams vs Bills on Monday Night Football

It was a wild week of football, but we still have one game on the schedule before the week closes, and it is a great one. The Rams and Bills play on Monday Night Football, and Underdog is offering new users the promo code FOXNEWS to earn $100 on a $5 wager.

There is a lot of season left, and looking at standings and results from this season, it seems like there is a lot of parity around the league. But it wouldn’t be a difficult argument to make that tonight’s game is a potential Super Bowl preview. Even given that the current odds on the market show that these two are more likely to make it than others.

The Buffalo Bills are 3-1 and coming off a loss to the Patriots. It is hard to evaluate the Bills because the team isn’t that good, but their success comes from Josh Allen covering up a lot of flaws. He can hit almost any throw, and his legs are a major difference-maker. He already has seven rushing touchdowns this season.

The defense does have quite a bit of struggle. Even with just four games under their belt, they are the third-worst passing defense in football. Their rushing defense is better, but they aren’t particularly great, allowing 116 rushing yards per game to opponents.

The Los Angeles Rams are just 2-2 for the season. They have played in some very strange games this year. In their season opener, they had to travel to Australia, and it was a disaster against the 49ers. Then they came home and dropped the Giants, but New York lost starter Jaxon Dart in that game.

Their past two games saw them drop one to the Broncos and win one over the Eagles. Both were road games. Against Denver, they were up 16-0 at halftime, and the defense just couldn’t get a stop when needed in the second half, giving up 30 points. Against the Eagles, they were down 20-10, but two fourth-quarter touchdowns gave them the win.

Two great teams with a few big questions to answer square off tonight. Will the Bills defense put together a good game, or will the Rams manage to win this with a complete game? You can make the call on Underdog and take advantage of the promo code FOXNEWS. Bet $5 on tonight’s game and earn a $10 bonus bet token. Repeat that process for ten days to earn $100 in bonus bets.

Hurricane Isaias’ devastating aftermath comes into focus in striking images

Hurricane Isaias’ devastating aftermath comes into focus in striking images

Communities are beginning to assess the damage left behind by a powerful hurricane that tore through the region, leaving homes damaged, roads flooded and neighborhoods littered with debris.

Photos from some of the hardest-hit areas show the scale of the destruction as residents and emergency crews begin the long process of cleaning up and rebuilding.

HOW THE VIOLENT CATEGORY 2 STORM UNFOLDED ACROSS FLORIDA AND GULF COAST

Isaias slammed into the Florida Panhandle near Destin on Friday, Oct. 9, as a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph, bringing destructive winds, dangerous storm surge and widespread flooding.

The hurricane tore roofs from buildings, uprooted trees and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of customers across Florida and Alabama before pushing inland.

Isaias marked the first hurricane to make landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast since Hurricane Milton battered Florida in October 2024, nearly two years earlier.

The storm also became the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season, ending an unusually quiet stretch that saw no hurricanes develop until October.

As Isaias moved inland and weakened, the full extent of the hurricane's destruction began to emerge.

Jets defender delivers brutal hit to Browns rookie wide receiver, knocks him out of the game

Jets defender delivers brutal hit to Browns rookie wide receiver, knocks him out of the game

New York Jets safety Minkah Fitzpatrick delivered an old-school hit to Cleveland Browns rookie wide receiver KC Concepcion in the first quarter of their matchup on Sunday afternoon.

At the wet and rainy MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the Browns were looking to get points on the board as the Jets got out to a 7-0 lead. Deshaun Watson saw Concepcion get some space and threw the ball to him. Fitzpatrick was lurking in the secondary.

Just as Concepcion was going to presumably catch the ball and turn up field, Fitzpatrick welcomed Concepcion to the NFL with a brutal hit. Fitzpatrick appeared to lead with his helmet and was flagged for a hit on a defenseless receiver.

Concepcion appeared to have his bell rung. He was down on the ground for several moments before getting up and walking off the field under his own power. He was ruled out for the rest of the game.

Cleveland was able to notch a field goal on the drive.

The Browns selected Concepcion in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. He played collegiate football at N.C. State and Texas A&M before turning pro. He emerged as a reliable target in the Browns’ offense. He came into the game with 17 catches for 144 yards so far this year.

Fitzpatrick has already been known as a hard-hitting defensive back. In his first season with the Jets, he has 16 tackles and an interception.

Cleveland is hoping to continue its winning ways. The Browns entered the game with a 3-1 record and in first place in the AFC North. The Jets were also hoping to get back into the win column after losing three consecutive games.

Rangers star goalie Igor Shesterkin out for the season after scary lower-body injury in loss vs Capitals

Rangers star goalie Igor Shesterkin out for the season after scary lower-body injury in loss vs Capitals

The New York Rangers’ hot start to the 2026-27 NHL season took a turn for the worst, as star goaltender Igor Shesterkin is out for the season after suffering a lower-body injury in Friday’s loss to the Washington Capitals.

The Rangers announced the devastating news on Saturday following a scary injury in which the 30-year-old’s right skate jammed into the post while gliding across his crease in the first period.

It was a nasty-looking injury, as video replay showed Shesterkin’s leg awkwardly bent after his skate jammed into the post during a scramble in the Rangers’ zone. Shesterkin was just trying to reposition after making a save, but he wasn’t prepared for the impact with the pipe.

"Well, it’s concerning obviously," Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan said after the game. "He’s an elite goaltender, and you don’t ever want to see anybody get hurt, but obviously he’s an important player for us."

Shesterkin, who signed an eight-year, $92 million deal in December 2024, was unable to put weight on his right leg as his teammates helped him off the ice. The Capitals ended up taking the win, 3-1, at home.

Dyland Garand took over for Shesterkin in net, and he’ll need to have a larger role moving forward.

It doesn’t help that New York is also dealing with goalie injuries beyond Shesterkin, with Joonas Korpisalo expected to miss another month, per The New York Post, while Spencer Martin at AHL Hartford is considered day-to-day.

It’s unknown whether the Rangers will be looking outside the organization for a goalie replacement, though it should be discussed considering the options at the moment.

"It’s awful," Rangers captain J.T. Miller said after the game, per Yahoo Sports. "He’s a pillar of this team. It stinks. …We don’t even know what’s going on, but to see him leave the game is a shot to all of us, a shock to all of us. But at the same time, it means we got to step up to a man to try to get the job done, especially [Garand]."

The Rangers are coming off a brutal 2025-26 campaign in which they finished at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division with a 34-39-9 record for a total of 77 points. By comparison, the Stanley Cup-winning Carolina Hurricanes had 113 points at the end of the regular season.

After a loss to the Boston Bruins to begin the new campaign, the Rangers ripped off four straight wins behind tremendous goaltending by their netminder. Shesterkin allowed just five goals total across the four wins, while owning a .927 save percentage (101 saves on 109 shots) for the season.

Eagles release Pro Bowl quarterback Andy Dalton after just one disastrous pass in loss

Eagles release Pro Bowl quarterback Andy Dalton after just one disastrous pass in loss

The Philadelphia Eagles saw Andy Dalton throw one pass and decided they'd seen enough.

Dalton, 38, entered the Eagles’ 27-7 Week 3 loss to the Chicago Bears after Jalen Hurts briefly left the game with an injury. The Eagles were down 7-0 in the second quarter and faced third-and-goal from the Bears' 2-yard line.

The three-time Pro Bowler took the shotgun snap but threw an interception when rookie safety Dillon Thieneman jumped the pass. On Friday, before the team departed for London, the Eagles released Dalton.

After Dalton’s interception, the Eagles promoted Tanner McKee to the backup quarterback role, dropping the former Cincinnati Bengals star to No. 3 on the depth chart. Now, he is no longer with the team.

The Eagles were the sixth team Dalton played for during his NFL career . He was a starter for the first nine years of his career with the Bengals but has since served as a backup for several teams.

Following his nine-year run with the Bengals, the three-time Pro Bowler played for the Dallas Cowboys (one season), Chicago Bears (one season), New Orleans Saints (one season), Carolina Panthers (three seasons) and Eagles.

Dalton had started games for every team he played for except the Eagles.

Dalton has played in 180 games, starting 169 of them, and has compiled an 84-83-2 record. He has completed 62.6% of his passes for 39,793 yards, 254 touchdowns and 152 interceptions.

The Eagles (2-2) will play the Jacksonville Jaguars (3-1) in London at 9:30 a.m. ET on Sunday.

Trump says Rogers 'completely obliterated' El-Sayed in debate

Trump says Rogers 'completely obliterated' El-Sayed in debate

President Donald Trump said that Michigan GOP U.S. Senate candidate former Rep. Mike Rogers "obliterated" Democratic opponent Abdul El-Sayed in a Thursday night debate.

"Mike Rogers, the great American Patriot and Republican Candidate for the U.S. Senate from Michigan, completely obliterated Mohammad El-Sayed in the big debate tonight. If this was a fight they would have stopped it," the president declared in a Truth Social post issued shortly after midnight on Friday.

"Mohammad is a Jihadist lunatic who hates our Country, the Black People of Detroit, and wants to see the U.S. fail. Short on Stature, Patriotism, and Truth, Mohammed’s statements have been loaded up with lies and deceit. I won Michigan BIG, and know that Mike Rogers, a total winner, is the man for you!!!" Trump added.

MICHIGAN SENATE DEBATE ERUPTS INTO PERSONAL ATTACKS AS ROGERS, EL-SAYED CLASH OVER ISRAEL, IRAN AND MORE

El-Sayed's campaign and the White House did not immediately respond for comment to Fox News Digital.

Trump has endorsed Rogers, who previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives from early 2001 until early 2015. Trump also backed Rogers in 2024, but the GOP candidate lost the 2024 Michigan U.S. Senate race to then-Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin.

EL-SAYED'S SCATHING OBAMA CRITIQUE RESURFACES AHEAD OF JOINT CAMPAIGN RALLY

In part of a Wednesday Truth Social post, the president wrote, "Mohammed El-Sayed is a terrible Candidate for the Dumocrats. While his opponent, Mike Rogers, is an extremely good one, Mohammed goes back to the days of the Jihad. He is a RADICAL Extremist, Terrorist Sympathizer, and no different from his best friend, America Hating Hasan Piker."

UNEARTHED SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS CONTRADICT EL-SAYED'S 'CAPITALIST' NARRATIVE

El-Sayed, whose full name is Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, declared in a statement on Thursday, "He knows my name is Abdul. He says it every day. But he’s not just attacking me. He's attacking all of us. He thinks so low of us. He thinks he can use my name and my faith to distract us from the suffering his policies are inflicting on us at the pump, at the grocery store, and at the doctor’s office. He thinks we don’t know any better. It's time for change."
